Zion Ultras Event Cancelled

100 mile / 100K / 50K / Trail Half Marathon
April 18-19, 2020

To all runners registered for any race distance at the 2020 Zion Ultras:

Due to escalating conditions surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2020 Zion Ultras is officially cancelled. We know this is disappointing. We’re disappointed, too. If it were up to me alone, I would hold the race as long as the permitting agencies allowed. However, for now, we feel like it is the responsible thing to do.

We’ve worked out a plan to make sure you have some reasonable options. While we know your first choice is for us not to cancel, unfortunately that is no longer possible. You will need to make a decision before the end of March.

You have four options to choose from:

  1. Run the race virtually & get credit toward a future race - We’ll ship your race shirt and bib and set up a reporting system. You’ll have a two-week window to finish your race (from April 11th to April 26th), which you can run anywhere, including the original course if you wish. Once you’ve reported your time, we’ll ship your finisher award. In addition, we will also give you a race credit to any of our future events. The amount of the credit will vary depending on your distance:
          • Half Marathon - $50 credit
          • 50K - $75 credit
          • 100K - $100 credit
          • 100M - $125 credit
In essence, if you choose this option, you'll receive a coupon that can be used anytime for any of our races in the next two years.
  2. Defer your entry & get a $50 bonus credit - This means all the money you paid for race registration at Zion will be issued back to you as a race credit coupon code towards a future event. As a bonus, we also give you $50 extra race credit to any of our future events as well.
  1. Request a 50% refund - If the first two options don’t appeal to you, we can offer you a 50% refund of your registration. Refunds will be processed during the first full week of April.
  2. You can keep my registration fee - You understand that events are expensive, even when cancelled, and you want us to keep your registration fees to help cover our costs. We deeply appreciate your generosity and look forward to seeing you at an event soon! Once it’s safe to do so, we will give you the highest of fives.

You will need to login to RunSignup here and select which option you’d like to go with before the end of March.

As an event company, we try and think through possible problems that could get in our way so we can manage around them. This one caught us by surprise a little. We appreciate your patience and understanding right now. If you have any questions, please reach out to us. We’re answering inquiries as quickly as we can and are working hard to respond as fast as we can, but understand we may take a little longer than normal to respond to you.

  • General Notes Regarding all Vacation Races Events
What if I am registered for a different race this year?
What does this mean for me? With things continuing to change daily, we are taking each race on a case-by-case basis until the outbreak is resolved. Aside from the 2020 Zion Ultras, no other races have officially been cancelled. However, we have landed on a schedule for making a final decision one way or the other.

We figure most people have a 30-day window to receive full or partial refunds on lodging and other travel expenses. Because of this, we will make our official decision to hold or cancel each race on the corresponding dates below, roughly 35 days before the event. All registered runners will receive communications outlining their options at that time. Until then, assume the race is on unless you’ve heard differently from us. The dates on when Vacation Races plans to make an announcement or update for the next upcoming races are as follows:

  • Yosemite Half Marathon - April 6 (Event date: May 9)
  • Bryce Canyon Ultras - April 27 (Event date: May 30-31)
  • Grand Teton Half Marathon & 5K - May 4 (Event date: June 5-6)
  • Yellowstone Half Marathon & 5K - May 11 (Event date: June 12-13)
  • Glacier Half Marathon - May 25 (Event date: June 27)
For all events after the Glacier Half Marathon, it’s simply too early to say. However, right now we plan to make our final decision ~35 days before each race.

What does this mean for the 2021 race season? We will be opening registration for our 2021 race season just as we do every year. While we are doing our part to follow health and safety recommendations and contain the spread of COVID-19, our plan is still to bet against the apocalypse. 🙂 We expect to still be here in 2021. We plan to make some adjustments in the short term, but are looking forward to a return to normalcy as soon as possible. We have extended some of our price jumps, and will continue to adjust those and communicate to you as needed.

I still have questions!
We’re here to help! Salem will be going live on Facebook and Instagram tonight at 7pm (MDT) to discuss the situation and answer your questions. Even if you can’t join us live, the video will be available for viewing on our Facebook page after the fact.

For Zion races, on the deferral option it states the credits are valid for 2 years – can you advise exactly what this means for an expiration? Is it 2 years from the race date (so ~4/18/2022)? Or does does it include the full year of your events in 2022 (12/31/2022)? Thank you for all of your communication and options provided. Much appreciated.

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi James – The expiration date will be set two years from the race date, so 4/18/2022. All 2022 race registrations will be open by 4/18/22 so you can use the code for any of them.

  • Dave Ashton says:

If we choose to defer our entry, do we automatically gain entry to our chosen event for next year? The 100 miler sold out this year, so it would be great to have some sort of confidence to know we could run it next year without the chance of it selling out. Thanks, and stay safe everyone!! :)

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Dave – If you defer your registration you will get a deferment code to use when registration opens. We will send you a reminder email once registration is close to opening.

  • Christopher J Lance says:

I deferred my 100 miler and I’m trying to defer my wife’s half marathon Zion trail race. I cant find her registration to defer it. Any ideas how i can locate it and defer? Her name is Julie Lance

    Thank you,
    Chris

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Christopher – You will need to use the email address she used during registration. Let me know if you need that send to you.

  • Tony Moore says:

Ref. Zion 100..so if I run the 100 mi. On my own .in the time frame.and provide proof per your specs..do I get a buckle ? If so ..why not. Gota do something…these are stressful times. Tony 100 mile entrant..🐢

  • Marcy Beard says:

FYI I’m signed up for the 100k and I haven’t seen an email yet (not in spam either), just happened to check the website today. You might check your mailing to be sure everyone gets it.

Thanks for all the options, super appreciate it.

Any chance you have talked with Western States about how they will approach all these qualifiers getting cancelled? Wondering if I need to scramble to set up another race later in the year or if there will be some leniency. Or if no one knows yet.

    Thanks again!!
    Marcy

  • Susan Curnutte says:

If I choose the virtual option are there the same cut-off requirements or do I just need to get the distance run. I am slow regardless, but running by myself I will inevitably be slower than in an actual race.
