How To: Defer to Next Year

Refund policy details

To defer to the next year's event do the following:

  1. Sign in to your profile at
  2. Click Manage Registration next to the registration that you would like to defer
  3. Click the Defer menu item

This will remove you from this year's race and put you on the deferral list for next year's race. You won't see your deferred registration in your RunSignUp account, but don't be alarmed - before the race, you'll receive a deferment coupon that you can use to register for next year’s race (or any of our other races).

Questions or Comments?

  • Michelle Jones says:

I just realized you can do a deferral for a race. Is there any way I can get credit for a race that I didn’t defer on,but didn’t get to attend either?

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Michelle – Deferments need to happen prior to the race. Unfortunately, once the race has occurred you are no longer able to defer it. Please email if you have any questions about the policy.

  • Julie Ward says:

I inadvertently signed up for the 55k and meant for the 50 mile. (Antelope Canyon). How do I change it?

  • Michelle Valley says:

I am registered for the Grand Teton Half on 6/2/18. I emailed customer service on 5/7/18 requesting info on how to transfer my registration, including a charity bib, to next year’s race because I broke my foot. I never received a response to my email. After spending some time tonight looking on the site, it appears there is a deferment option where I could defer to next year’s race, but when I try and choose that option it will not allow me to do so. Help please!

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Michelle – A response to your email was sent on May 10th as follows:

I’m sorry to hear about your injury – I hope you heal quickly! You can transfer your registration to any of our other races, including this one next year. Find out more about these options here.
You can sell your bib to another runner but since the race isn’t sold out it might be hard to find someone. You can read more about that option in that same link.

However, it looks like you are registered for a charity bib. Charity bibs can only transfer if the full amount has been raised prior to the deferment. Otherwise, the amount raised will be donated and you are welcome to register for another charity bib next year.

      • MICHELLE VALLEY says:

Thank you for responding. I am not sure why, but I did not receive your response.

It is fine to donate the current amount raised to this year’s race, that’s not what I am concerned about. I am also not concerned about the registration fee I paid, but what I am trying to avoid is nothing being done so that I’m still registered for tomorrow’s race and my card is charged for the balance of the charity bib that was not raised. I did not try and raise money after I broke my foot. I would like to run next year’s Grand Teton Half. I am unable to do anything online, so who needs to remove me from tomorrow’s race, donate the current bib donations, and ensure I am not being charged for the balance of the bib?

        • Kaelee Clifford says:

HI Michelle – Your card will not be charged for the balance. You should have receive an invoice for the balance – I will cancel it.

  • Kim Wells says:

I’m trying to defer my registration to next year, for myself and another participant I registered. I logged into RunSignUp, selected Profile, and selected Manage Registration. On the “Choose Event” dropdown list, Grand Teton is listed, but can’t be selected. How do I complete the Transfer?

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Kim – It sounds like you are trying to do a race transfer rather than a deferment. You will need to follow these instructions to defer your registration:

      1. Sign In to RunSignUp
      2. Go to your Profile
      3. Click Manage Registration next to the registration that you would like to transfer your event for
      4. Click the Defer menu item

You will receive an email in a day or so with a deferment code that can be used to register for next year’s race with once registration opens.

I registered for the 2017 Rocky Mountain Half Marathon but had to defer. I paid the fee to do this. Unfortunately, I have to defer again, but when I tried to follow the directions it said I wasn’t registered for any event. 1) What happened to my deferral? And 2) How do I defer to 2019? I really want to run this half.

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Kelly – It looks like you didn’t use the deferral code that was emailed to you to register for this year’s race. You can use that code to register for next year’s race – I have extended the expiration date. If you need the code resent, please email

I tried to defer my Glacier Marathon Registration. It looks like I was charged $20, but then I was given a message that I had no race to defer. Please advise.

  • Meredith Patton says:

When am I able to use the deferral coupon to secure my spot in next year’s Grand Circle Trailfest? What is the earliest date I can reserve my spot for 2019?

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Meredith – You will be able to register with your deferment code as soon as registration for the 2019 event opens – usually a couple months after the current year’s event.

  • Jonathan says:

So are there any hidden fees to defer like with the race transfer? How much does the deferral coupon cover?

Paid $99 for the Joshua Tree Half, but will only be credited $79 towards transferring to another race and even then STILL have to pay the difference of the race registration.

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Jonathan – The $79 credit is the amount minus the $20 fee. You will have to pay the difference if you are registering for a race that costs more than what you originally paid in registration fees.

  • Jon M. says:

I’m looking to defer my Zion Half Marathon registration. The video and the comments give the impression that the $20 fee comes out of the amount already paid, but the process is requiring a new $20 payment to process my deferral. Is this a new change in the process or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Jon – Sorry for the confusion – you will be charged a $20 fee when processing a deferment. Your full registration fee will then be deferred to next year’s race, minus any add ons that have been purchased.

  • Jill fleming says:

I have to defer the Zions half, due to the government shutdown right now. I want to make sure I have this right; it costs $20 off of your registration, and then you get a code to register for next years race when the registration opens for that race again, you pay the $20 difference then?

  • Gina Ramsey says:

Last year I had injured my foot and had to defer my Zion Race to this February. Now I am unable to come to the race again, as there was an emergent need to move my father in law, who is elderly with dementia, in with us. I am curious if I am able to defer again?

    • Kaelee Clifford says:

Hi Gina – I’m sorry to hear you won’t be able to run with us this year. I have deferred your registration and emailed you an invoice for the $20 deferment fee. You will receive an email with a deferment code in the next week or two.

  • Annie Cline says:

Had to defer this year’s race at Zion. Weather and illness of my running partner forced my hand. Bummed for sure since this would have been my 5th race there! I was signed up to volunteer at the expo helping with bib/tshirt distribution. I am so sorry to have to cancel at this late notice. I promise to do garbage detail next year to make up for it!

When is the absolute last day to defer my race?

Trying to my deferral From last years race and it is not going through. I need to speak to someone about receiving my metals from the Grand Canyon half marathon.

  • Rebecca says:

I have not received my deferment email for the Great Smoky Mountain Half that I could not make last year.
